So, what is a doula?

Technically - a doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical and informational support to new and expectant parents before, during and after birth, and in the early postpartum period.

In other words - A doula is a couple's coach, helper, and encourager during childbirth. She provides a grounding presence full of knowledge and care so that families have as safe, healthy and positive of a labor experience as possible.

Not convinced you need a doula?

Did you know hiring a doula can...

  • Reduce the risk of cesarean birth

  • Decrease the need for pitocin

  • Reduce need for forceps or vacuum

  • Increase mother's satisfactions with her birth experience

  • Increase APGAR score for baby

  • Increase the confidence of the birth partner to help the laboring mother

  • Increase lactation support

  • Decrease postpartum anxiety and depression

Since they aren’t busy with the medical side of things, doulas are able to provide uninterrupted emotional support to moms and their families during labor and delivery. A doula cares for your whole person - she is just as concerned with your fears, hopes, and past experiences as she is with how quickly you are progressing. This care often leads to shorter, more peaceful labors with better medical and psychological outcomes for the mother, baby, and partner.
